My first impression of the Apple Vision: I like it, but I don’t like it.
You see your eyes on the outside of the device, but they’re not your eyes. What? Nope. I do not like.
But then I watched Marques Brownlee’s overview of the headset:
Apple has packed some amazing tech into it. Eye tracking, lifelike OLED screen inside the headset, 3D audio that reacts to your surroundings. There’s some amazing innovation in there.
Yeah, I like it.
Hang on, though. The FaceTime thing where it takes a 3D render of your face and matches your facial movements so anyone you’re speaking to sees a 3D uncanny valley version of you?
Nah, I don’t like it.
But then you can have a 100-foot screen for all your favorite movies. Anywhere! Imagine being pitchside as Scotland wins the World Cup (the World Cup of bowls, that is).
So yeah, I like this. I like this a lot!
But… the creepiness.

People are going to look like some kind of weird Minion tribute act when they are walking around. It’s just creepy.
So no, I don’t like it.
Then again, think about the possibilities for this technology for people who really need it. If you’ve ever had a big operation, you’ll know the anxiety you face staring at a ceiling in a hospital. Imagine instead being transported to a serene landscape with guided meditation.
Ok, I like it.
But then the 2-hour battery life. Come on Apple. Are you kidding? the average movie length is 2 hr 10min (yes, I looked it up). So you need to stay plugged in?
No, no, no, no, no…
But this is the first true Augmented reality headset. there have been lots of promises of this before. Think Magic Leap whale jumping in the gym from years back. But nobody has ever really managed to achieve this. And it looks like Apple have cracked. Ok, at a hefty price but…
Ok, I like it.
But just hang on a minute what is this 3D playback function so you can record your life like that Entire History of You episode of Black Mirror? I can do without that thank you very much.
So no.
Or maybe yes.
Oh, I don’t know…
